Hyper Extenders Anonymous: aka, My Manifesto!

Dear friends, Allow me to share this important moment for me on the last day of the teacher training with Francisco in January.

Dear friends,

Allow me to share this important moment for me on the last day of the teacher training with Francisco in January. Check out the video of me delivering the Hyper Extenders Anonymous Charter Document, aka My Manifesto!

As most of you know, I have a long history of studying and teaching yoga of all kinds, and of creating my own work during the Studio Be days.  And it was a good work, no doubt!  It was an exciting and beautiful time in our collective yoga history and memory.  I am honored to have been a part of something wonderful with such co-creation and collaboration from many different fields.  I’m so pleased to be teaching and practicing the Kaiut Yoga Method with you now, and to have the privilege of knowing some of you for two decades!

So even back then I questioned whether some of the things we were doing, and what I was observing in the greater yoga field, were sustainable.  So, jokingly, I wrote up this document called Hyper Extenders Anonymous, part confession, part apology, part acknowledgment of us all just doing our best with what we know/knew, and part solidarity with all yoga practitioners and teachers.

Please laugh with me, cry with me, and above all, evolve with me!  You can also read the full text below!

We, the members of Hyper Extenders Anonymous, do solemnly swear to never do the following SI joint destroying, hamstring shredding, and lumbar compressing actions:

Fold forward with a flat back, stretch our hamstrings, blossom our buttocks, lift our knee caps, adjust our sitting bones, or move the flesh of our buttocks back and apart.  We promise to cease and desist from such activities, and also to never instruct or facilitate those activities in others.

We will refrain from performing standing poses or arm balances on other people’s spines or thighs during such forward flexions including:  baddha konasana, upavistha konasana, and pascimottanasana.

Through acknowledgement, apology, and humor we will liberate ourselves and our students from any negative emotions or memories associated with the above actions, such as shame, guilt, trauma, regret, self-hatred in all its forms, and internal conflict. We will instead see this as part of our evolution, and an asset to our further teaching and understanding.

For here and ever after, we promise to:

Flex our spines, fold at our groins, improve our ankle mobility, and to allow a spiraling rotation of our femur heads in the hip sockets.
